MEET THE CHARITIES WE ARE SUPPORTING IN SCOTLAND AND CANADA

The Yard

The Yard is a purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure playground for children and young people with disabilities in the heart of Edinburgh.  It provides a safe environment where children and young people can experience play without feeling different.

In 2010 it faced the possibility of closure due to a variety of financial pressures.  Contact was made with one of the trustees who was able to see first hand the tremendous work being done and the growing unmet need for the services they provided.  An application was made to the trust who were able to provide a lifeline to keep The Yard operating, allowing them to seek other support.

In 2012 they were successful in a bid through Children in Need to have the resources of BBC's DIY SOS programme carry out an extensive refurbishment of the indoor and outdoor space which featured on the programme.

They have now opened Centre in Dundee and Kirkcaldy to bring their expertise and opportunities to an even greater number of young people.

Youth Employment Service (YES)

Based in Toronto, Canada, YES delivers programmes and services helping young people to find a job or start a business.  Specialising in career counselling and job placement YES is 83% successful in finding jobs, training, education or business outcomes.

In their Mission Statement they say that employment is empowerment and the cornerstone of safe and healthy communities.  They lead the Canadian youth sector with innovative programmes that empower disadvantaged and vulnerable youth to become self-sufficient contributing members of society.  Their aim is to change lives forever.

They identified that marginalised and alienated young people needed a specialised service tailored to their individual needs.

YES opened Canada's first Youth Business Centre to help those who did not seek a job but wanted to start a business.  Offering individual business skills training and help to attain start up loans, YES graduated hundreds of young entrepreneurs.

As a Teaching Centre, YES provides training to University and College graduates who have a placement component in their program to qualify for their degree or diploma.  Students are trained in working with disadvantaged youth in career counselling, workshop leadership, case management and job placement.

Today YES has grown to serve over 7,500 young people each year in all their programmes.  Operating from four locations in high priority neighborhoods over 100,000 disadvantaged youth have been helped with 82% success in jobs, training or education outcomes since inception in 1968.
